Philosophy
Music lessons are a collaborative effort. I encourage my students to take the initiative and to be pro-active in their learning experience. Therefore, developing a trusting relationship that encourages dialogue is central to my teaching method. I believe developing good technique can facilitate freedom of expression. I believe in encouraging students to explore the diversity of all styles of music. I believe that each student's needs and strengths are unique and need to be addressed as such. Goals are established together and music is selected accordingly. Learning how to practice is an art in itself. Beginning students are not born knowing how to spend those precious moments. Getting the most out of one's practice time is a skill that is developed over time and boosts future growth tenfold. Though lessons can be a lot of fun, the prime objective of music education is not to entertain the student (though this has been known to happend from time to time!) The study of music aspires to greater ideals: to inspire, to educate, to build confidence, to reward and to grow. My goal as a teacher is not to turn out concert pianists and opera singers, though I will happily prepare anyone who wants to travel that path. My primary goal is to prove to all students that they are capable of creating music and exploring the reaches of their potential. Everyone deserves to experience that joy.
